Proposal 07
Urban logistics and deliveries
Loading bays, delivery windows and neighbourhood hubs to keep vans out of the running lane.
The problem
Double-parked loading and unloading is one of the most frequent daily causes of slowdown in centres. Banning deliveries does not eliminate them: it moves them to worse times or worse methods.
The intervention
Loading bays sized on real demand, delivery windows tuned by zone, neighbourhood hubs in peripheral areas with last-leg delivery. Commerce needs the street as much as the resident does.
- Where it works
- Shopping streets, historic centres with shops and cafés, areas with many home deliveries.
- What to measure
- Obstruction of the carriageway, average dwell time per delivery, running speed during delivery hours.
- Guiding rule
- Prior study: no increase in travel time and no overlap of flows. Verification afterwards with the Travel Time Index.
This describes a family of interventions: costs, feasibility and impacts must be assessed case by case with local surveys and a network model.
