Proposal 08
Roads for new-generation vehicles
Charging, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and quality maintenance: the road must evolve with the vehicle.
The problem
Vehicles are changing: electric and hybrid propulsion, connectivity, driver assistance. Roads, often, are not. Where charging is scarce and signage degrades, every advantage of the vehicle is lost in time spent searching and waiting.
The intervention
A widespread, fast charging network along through routes and in structured car parks, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication for signals and junctions, signage legible to assistance systems, scheduled maintenance and coordination of roadworks.
- Where it works
- Main corridors, interchange nodes, service fleets and public transport.
- What to measure
- Charging time included in the journey, availability of charge points, duration and impact of roadworks on travel time.
- Guiding rule
- Prior study: no increase in travel time and no overlap of flows. Verification afterwards with the Travel Time Index.
This describes a family of interventions: costs, feasibility and impacts must be assessed case by case with local surveys and a network model.
