Proposal 02
Adaptive green wave
Dynamic signal coordination along whole corridors, tuned to real flows.
The problem
Many signal installations still run on fixed-time plans calibrated on old surveys and never re-checked. Every additional stop along a corridor is lost time, wasted fuel or energy, and a pointless restart.
The intervention
Sensors and flow data to adjust phases and offsets along the axis in real time, with priority for the dominant corridor and for public transport. It is the quickest and cheapest intervention on the list: often it can be done without touching the asphalt.
- Where it works
- Corridors with closely spaced junctions and predictable flows, cities whose signal plans have not been revisited for years.
- What to measure
- Average stops per kilometre, commercial speed on the axis, change in median travel time before and after retiming.
- Guiding rule
- Prior study: no increase in travel time and no overlap of flows. Verification afterwards with the Travel Time Index.
This describes a family of interventions: costs, feasibility and impacts must be assessed case by case with local surveys and a network model.
